The Centre for Environmental Rights (CER), an OSF-SA grantee, recently released a series of reports entitled ‘Full Disclosure – the truth about mining rehabilitation in South Africa’. The reports analyse the extent to which South African mining companies accurately reflect their environmental compliance records, and their environmental impacts and liabilities, in their reports to shareholders.
The CER analysed disclosures by eleven listed mining companies about their financial provision for environmental rehabilitation, i.e. the money that mining companies must set aside to rehabilitate the environmental damage they cause.
