Silicosis/tuberculosis class action settlement
Yesterday, May 3rd 2018, a historic settlement was reached between South African mineworkers and seven gold mining companies, the first class action settlement of its kind in the country. The Legal Resources Centre, Abrahams Kiewitz Inc and Richard Spoor Attorneys, on behalf of thousands of mineworkers, reached a settlement with the Occupational Lung Disease (OLD) Working Group representing the companies that will see compensation paid to eligible mineworkers suffering from silicosis and/or tuberculosis. This settlement is the result of years of extensive negotiations between the representative attorneys and the OLD Working Group. While this serves as some form of justice for the mineworkers and their families, there is more work to be done on ensuring safe and healthy working conditions in the mines and on reforming the mineworker compensation system in South Africa. Hopefully this settlement will lead to greater efforts by government and the industry to improve working conditions.
