FAQ

South African registered not-for-profit entities, trusts, public interest media and university-based institutions in South Africa. All entities must have appropriate governance structures in place that include term limits and rotation, transformation plans, sexual harassment policies and accountable financial systems.

In some instances, where an entity is not registered, it can apply through a fiscal agent. A fiscal agent is an eligible entity, that manages grant funds and all required reporting on behalf of the entity and agrees to be liable for the financial management of the grant.

No. OSF-SA considers applications twice a year, through two funding cycles and special calls. We are unable to consider applications that are not submitted through this process. For more information and important dates, visit the funding page on our website.

The application process has multiple phases and takes place over a period of 6 months. Full details of the process are available on the funding page. Please note that OSF-SA will only be able to consider applications that are received through our formal application process and online application portal. Applications outside of this process will not be considered.

No. OSF-SA does not provide grants to individuals.

In some instances, OSF-SA is able to provide two-year grants. However, this decision is made on a case-by-case basis by the OSF-SA Board, and is subject to budget availability.

OSF-SA funds core and project costs.

Core funding supports an organisation’s functioning as a whole, such as rent, full-time salaries and other fixed costs.

Project funding relates to costs for a specific project or initiative that an organisation wants to undertake. Examples include, workshops, time-specific projects.

Bifurcation refers to dividing an organisation’s budget between lobbying and non-lobbying ‘activities’. Our funds are in part governed by US federal tax regulations. This means that OSF cannot engage in or support any efforts that “attempt to influence legislation” (i.e. “lobbying”) directly using our US sourced funds. Therefore, we review grant proposals and grantee reports to determine lobbying components. Accurate reporting is therefore essential, and legally required. Our non-US sourced funds permit lobbying activities.

No. Please submit a single EOI. If the proposed work aligns with the work of multiple programmes, please indicate this in your application as all grant proposals are reviewed by the entire programme team, even across programmes.

No. Please only submit an application for one grant cycle per year for core and project costs. If you are a current grantee and you are unsure of which cycle your organisation falls under, please contact the grant officer stipulated in the grant agreement. All relevant application dates are available on our website funding page and Facebook and Twitter pages.

No. OSF-SA does not fund organisations based outside of South Africa.

No. All applications and financial reports must include a budget prepared on the OSF-SA budget template.

No. All progress reports must be submitted on the OSF-SA reporting template. If not, the processing of the progress report will be delayed, and this may have implications for grant payments. If you want to submit additional information or reports, please do so with any progress report.

OSF-SA observes a strict COI policy, and we require all organisations applying for funding to declare any actual or perceived conflict of interests with any staff and/or Board member of OSF-SA and vice versa.

OSF-SA Board members and all staff must conduct their affairs in the organisation’s best interests. They must avoid conflicts of interest, or the appearance thereof, between their personal interests and those of OSF-SA; and they must ensure that neither they nor their family members receive any improper personal benefit from their position at OSF-SA. All actual or perceived conflicts of interest must be disclosed by both parties. In addition to our grantees signing COI declarations, our staff and Board members are also expected to declare their interests.

Please visit our staff page and board page. OSF-SA and OSF have policies and procedures in place to deal with managing different types of conflicts including at Board and executive management level.

In the event of a declared COI, the conflicted person is not permitted to deal with any aspect of the grant application and review.

Each application is considered on its own strategic merits and must fall within our strategic focus areas and approach. However, OSF-SA does not support the following:

  1. Projects located and for the benefit of a country outside of South Africa.
  2. Projects providing social services such as health clinics, creches, hosting of youth groups, food parcels etc.
  3. Humanitarian relief.
  4. Scholarships, bursaries and individualised academic or other support.

Yes, your organisation can request a no-cost extension. If your organisation anticipates delays in completing OSF-SA funded work, you must notify OSF-SA 3 months before your grant comes to an end. Please note OSF-SA is not able to extend the grant period after the grant period has ended due to US tax regulations that relate to US sourced funds.

In order to request a no-cost extension, please direct your request and reasons to the responsible programme officer/manager and grants@osfsa.org.za.

Any US sourced funds not spent at the end of the grant period must be returned to OSF-SA. If you anticipate delays with completing the project within the stipulated time, please request an extension before the grant concludes.
